2008 marked the year China had hosted the Olympic games, but it also marked the year the Cairo Opera House was celebrating its 20th anniversary. Based on an invitation from the Cairo Opera House, the China National Opera House performed 4 performances of the famous Puccini opera in Cairo. The initiative was part of an exchange project based on the long years of collaboration between the two countries, where the Cairo Opera House ensemble was later invited to perform Aida opera in Beijing in celebration of the Olympic year in China.
